What is Giardiasis ?
Giardiasis (pronounced as g-r-d-asis) is a germ that mainly leads to diarrhea. It is caused by a parasite called Giardia.
How does Giardiasis spread ?
This infection usually occurs by consumption of contaminated water or food that contains the cysts of giardia.
What are the symptoms of Giardiasis ?
Children present with watery loose motions, vomiting, mild pain in abdomen, eructation of gas, foul smelling flatus and uneasiness. Chronic infection may lead to weight loss and malnourished children.
How is diagnosis of Giardiasis made ?
It is diagnosed by examination of stool and isolating the cysts of the giardia.
How is Giardiasis treated ?
Giardiasis is a 100% treatable disease and specific antibiotics may be used for the treatment under a doctor?s prescription.
How can Giardiasis prevented ?
Filtration of water and boiling of water kills cysts that cause giardiasis. There is no vaccine available for prevention of Giardia.

WHAT IS SWINE FLU?
Swine flu is a respiratory infection seen in pigs due to Influenza viruses. They spread among pigs due to mutual contact but usually do not spread to the Human beings. It may spread to humans due to close contact with the pigs or environments contaminated with swine influenza viruses. Subsequently human to human spread may occur via coughing and sneezing.
